The Municipality Watchdog is concerned by the disposal of ballot boxes and ballot papers.

André Pieterse, founder of the Municipality Watchdog said he will be writing to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) where he will demand some clarity after concerns were raised on the disposal of ballot boxes and marked ballot papers after the Local Government Elections last Wednesday, 3 August. A case where ballot boxes have been left scattered after the elections in Krugersdorp is also a key issue.

This comes after pictures on social media showed ballot boxes as well as ballot Papers left unattended or discarded at voting stations across the country and that correct disposal procedures were not followed by officials of the IEC.

Presiding officers in charge of this voting stations must be held accountable as the correct procedures was not follows as per the Local Government: Municipal Electoral Act 27 of 2000.

This practice must be investigated, voters put their trust in the IEC to unsure elections are conducted free and fairly.
